Background

The world of StarCraft has the same allure that most blizzard games tend to bring with them. They draw you into a world of mystery and intrigue, with their rich story lines and campaigns that make you feel like you are part of the story. StarCraft 1 was at the heart of the blizzard empire and a pioneer in the real time strategy genre as it grew in popularity and had a substantial following. Only one expansion was released, Brood war. This left fans having high expectations for the lengthy 12 year wait for the highly anticipated sequel StarCraft 2. Blizzard was able to pull it off, finding the balance of old and new and creating one of their most polished games to date. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty includes a lengthy and compelling single player campaign, alongside some of the best multiplayer and co-op functionality. Veterans of StarCraft 1 get that sense of nostalgia as developers stayed true to the original title in many ways. It has a slick and gorgeous front-end, beautifully textured backdrops, and amazing cinematics that Blizzard has come to be known for.

Whats Its About?

Blizzard made StarCraft 2 Wing Of Valour free in 2017, allowing gamers to play the Terran or human campaign as well as have access to playing on the online multiplayer circuit. If you are new to the Blizzard realm, you will realise something incredibly quickly. The their world is completely subversive, the lore is rich and their storylines are deep and will draw you in. The campaign, the core of the game, Picks up where the expansion StarCraft Brood War left off. We see the return or the beloved hero, Jim Raynor, as he seeks revenge against arch nemeses Arcturus Mengsk of the dominion, forcing unusual alliances and plot twist that as you fight for survival in the substantial 27 map campaign. The core of the game is simple. Economics and Military strategy are equally important as players establish their base, build up defences, train units and upgrade technology and seek to maintain a steady flow of income from mining minerals around the map as you fight off enemy attacks and constantly try to catch opponents off guard. Although the campaign is Terran based (human), Online and Bot play allows you to explore all three races, allowing for huge contrasts in style of gameplay and tactics across the board. The hearty Terrans, using their military might and force. The Zerg, a terrifying prehistoric insect like alien race that uses its brutality and overwhelming numbers to consume everything in its path. The stalwart Protoss, an ancient humanoid alien that utilises the pure energy of the galaxy and combines it with futuristic technology. If the campaign is not your thing, practise against AI or test your skill on a huge variety of maps in 1v1 2v2, 3,3 or 4v4, Which makes great fun playing against or with a group of friends.

Pros

  • If Blizzard offered only the competitive side for free, this game would still be on the list, the fact that the entire first campaign is free as well is a huge plus!

  • The game is old, but it still boast great graphics that don't require super high PC specs.

Starcraft 2 Game Review

Conclusion

StarCraft 2 manages to stand the test of time in terms of graphics, gameplay, popularity and (re)playability. Blizzard was able to close the gap between StarCraft 1's veterans nostalgia and a generation of new-comers to the franchise. StarCraft 2 remains one of the deepest most balanced games out there, offering players keen for a solo adventure an immersive campaign that can be played over and over like watching a great movie again. Its well worth eventually getting the expansion packs and having the complete series just due to the depth of this game and playability.
